The IFAB and FIFA issuing guidelines to enhance on-field collaboration between captains and referees

At its Annual General Meeting in March 2024, The IFAB announced a series of trials aimed at improving player behaviour on the field. These measures, initially available to competitions not involving teams from the top two domestic levels or senior “A” international matches, include a global trial where only the team captain can approach the referee in certain situations.

The IFAB and FIFA have acknowledged the successful use of a similar approach at the UEFA EURO 2024. This approach, designed more for the top end of football but within the framework and spirit of the Laws of the Game, enhances fairness and respect in football while enabling and encouraging an open line of dialogue between the referee and the teams.

Consequently, The IFAB and FIFA have today issued guidelines, primarily aimed for top-level competitions not taking part in the trial.
